Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Texas, Gibson was influenced early on by educators' profound effect on his community. This realization steered him towards a career in education. After graduating from East Texas Baptist University in 1993, he furthered his education at Lamar University, earning a Master’s in Education in 2002. His educational journey didn't stop there; he pursued a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Houston, completed in 2015. This advanced education not only equipped him with vital leadership skills but also allowed him to forge meaningful connections with fellow educators.

Formative Years in Education

Jerry began his professional journey hoping to integrate his twin passions for academics and athletics. He succeeded in securing a position within a top Texas district, where he served in multiple capacities, including teacher, head coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. His desire to make a broader impact led him to focus on school administration, culminating in his appointment as the Executive Director of Secondary Education at Waco Independent School District in 2011. Here, he oversaw the operations of nearly a dozen schools, catering to over 6,500 students.

Leadership as Superintendent

His progression from teaching roles to principalship prepared him for higher leadership responsibilities. Over ten years, he served as superintendent for three different school districts, including Coldspring, Oakhurst, and Marshall, TX. He tackled unique challenges in each position, from implementing new educational strategies to managing stakeholder relationships and prioritizing student access to necessary resources and support.

Accolades and Professional Recognition

Gibson has received numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, including the ESC 7 Superintendent of the Year in 2020 and a finalist for the Varsity Brands Superintendent of the Year. His leadership has been recognized with awards and through tangible improvements in academic performance, such as the transformation of Marshall ISD from a nearly failing grade to a B average within three years.

Life Beyond the Office

Outside of his professional endeavors, he cherishes time with his family. He resides on Galveston Island and enjoys visits from his grown children and six grandchildren. His commitment extends beyond his professional duties; he actively supports local and national charities, contributing to causes that benefit the Galveston and Houston areas. Whether attending local sports events or golfing in Galveston, he balances his professional commitments with personal fulfillment.
